Hydraclean is a long-established water hygiene and legionella compliance services specialist, helping clients across the UK to understand and comply with the latest regulations. Working nationwide, the company fleet plays a central role in the business’s operations, with travel to and from sites making up a large part of the job for many of the company’s employees.

With so many workers out on the road, it was important that Hydraclean could ensure their drivers were safe, efficient, and compliant – whether these were drivers in company cars travelling to sites to carry out surveys, or van drivers on their way to deliver water treatment and engineering services.

Lightfoot was posed to Hydraclean as the solution they were looking for by Arthur J Gallagher, one of Lightfoot’s Risk Management Partners. Delivering improvements in driver safety, fuel economy, fleet sustainability, and operational compliance, it was clear that Lightfoot was the ideal fit for the water treatment specialists.

Shifting driver performance up a gear

technical innovation

The free Lightfoot trial showed Hydraclean just what they could gain by rolling Lightfoot out to their fleet.

The differences between the blind phase – where Lightfoot is connected to the vehicle but only recording data – and the live phase – where Lightfoot is fully operational, providing audible and visual feedback to drivers to improve their performance behind the wheel – were remarkable.

The fleet experienced an MPG uplift of 10.7%, a 71% decline in harsh acceleration, and a 100% reduction in dangerous driving (time spent with the red lights displayed on the Lightfoot dashboard device). This means the fleet is now saving a fantastic £11,777 every year in fuel, as well as reducing its carbon footprint by 23 tonnes annually too.

Danny Howard, Water Hygiene Manager at Hydraclean, commented:

“I think that’s been one of the biggest surprises for us about Lightfoot – just how much it’s improved driver performance. We trust our employees and wanted a solution that would help us keep them safe on the road without tracking them all the time. Lightfoot gave us the option to do just that, but the additional savings we’ve seen have been incredible. 87% of our drivers are consistently hitting the target, which means big wins for us in terms of fuel savings and carbon reductions, as well as cracking down on dangerous habits like braking sharply or accelerating too fast.”

A long-term commitment to a better fleet

The rollout of Lightfoot’s award-winning driver coaching and rewards technology across Hydraclean’s fleet has been so successful over the last few years that they’ve recently renewed their contract, reinforcing their commitment to better fleet performance.

In particular, the environmental savings offered by Lightfoot are increasingly important to the water hygiene company. Working in the industry that they do, Hydraclean are keen to show that sustainability is a core focus, and the reduction in carbon emissions – as well as harmful pollutants such as NOx and NEE – as a result of their partnership with Lightfoot is proof that environmentally friendly operations are part of the wider picture. The Hydraclean fleet has also begun investing in EVs and hopes to transition more vehicles to electric in the near future.

Danny Howard said:

“It’s important to us that we’re not only talking the talk, but that we’re walking the walk as well when it comes to being an environmentally responsible company. Lightfoot is great in this respect because it allows us to keep track of our CO2 reductions and incentivises our drivers to be greener when they’re out on the road.

When we first introduced Lightfoot, there were a few negative preconceptions about the tech, but now I hear drivers say that it really has helped to improve their driving. To anyone considering Lightfoot for their fleet, I say don’t think twice – it’s easy to use and easy to manage, and you certainly won’t be disappointed by the results.”

Steve Critchlow, Account Director at Gallagher, who introduced Lightfoot to Hydraclean, had this to add:

“We’re always thrilled to see our clients using innovative technology to manage risk within their fleets, and Hydraclean is no exception. We knew Lightfoot would be a great fit for the company and it’s wonderful to see them benefit in all areas of their fleet operations as a result.”
