Overview
Sciensus was looking to improve the performance of its fleet and manage risk more effectively. Lightfoot’s real-time driver coaching and rewards technology has helped the business boost efficiency, prioritise road safety, and take driver performance all the way to the top.
“The improvements we’ve seen since rolling out Lightfoot have been significant.”
- Ross Baxter, Fleet Manager, Sciensus
About Sciensus
Sciensus is a leading life sciences solutions partner, with an essential part of the business involving the provision of clinical care and essential medication to patients throughout the UK and Europe. Within the UK, the Sciensus fleet is made up of company cars, used by nurses and care staff, and pharmavans – specialist temperature-controlled vehicles transporting pharmaceuticals and lifesaving medicines across the country.
The Challenge
Sciensus had never used a telematics solution or any form of in-cab driver coaching technology in the fleet before, but knew that something needed to change.
Collision rates within the delivery van fleet were beginning to lead to higher risk scores, and this was in turn resulting in increased insurance costs.
The Sciensus fleet team set themselves the challenge of improving safety and overall performance within the delivery fleet, with the aim of reducing costs and boosting driver wellbeing.
The Solution
As part of its commitment to a safer, more established fleet, Sciensus brought about several changes – bringing in more professional drivers, changing depot management, and onboarding new vans. Ross Baxter, Fleet Manager at Sciensus, had used Lightfoot in a previous company and knew the driver coaching solution was the final piece of the puzzle when it came to changing driving behaviour for the better.
“Lightfoot has proved to be the cornerstone of our fleet renaissance, effectively providing us with a yardstick with which to measure our fleet’s performance.”
- Ross Baxter, Fleet Manager, Sciensus
Following a successful free trial of Lightfoot’s fleet management system, the telematics devices were rolled out across the Sciensus fleet, and now drivers receive real-time guidance on how to travel in a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable way.
After every journey, drivers are given a score out of 100%, with a target score of 85% and above. Reaching this goal at the end of the week unlocks Elite Driver status, meaning that drivers can win prizes through weekly competitions and compete in league tables within the dedicated Lightfoot app.
This is something that drivers take very seriously within the Sciensus fleet. TV screens displayed in the fleet’s depots broadcast the top ten drivers of the month according to their Lightfoot scores, which the management team can pull directly from the Lightfoot Portal. With the team’s highly competitive spirit, it turns out this is exactly the encouragement Sciensus’s drivers needed to focus on improving their performance behind the wheel.
“If we have a van that doesn’t yet have the Lightfoot device installed in it – say it’s a new van that’s just joined our fleet – the drivers don’t want to take it. They only want to drive a van with Lightfoot in, because keeping up their score and maintaining the Elite Driver level of performance, that’s become hugely important to them. It’s certainly upped the game for us.”
- Ross Baxter, Fleet Manager, Sciensus
It’s not just driver league tables that the Sciensus team have come to rely on within Lightfoot’s fleet management portal. The system is packed full of valuable data and insights, and in particular the team have found a great deal of value in the fleet tracking options, with the feature now forming an essential part of the Sciensus fleet’s everyday operations.
As part of the fleet’s resolution to prioritise driver safety and wellbeing, Lightfoot’s First Notification of Loss (FNOL) feature has also proved incredibly useful. By providing the team with an alert as soon as a suspected incident takes place, the system ensures Sciensus can quickly and easily fulfil its duty of care requirements and manage fleet risk more effectively than ever.

The Results
Since introducing Lightfoot into its fleet, Sciensus has seen huge improvements across all areas, particularly safety and risk management.
The proof-of-concept trial showed that with Lightfoot’s in-cab coaching, dangerous driving behaviours would be reduced by as much as 77%, and the data since the full rollout reflects this. As part of Sciensus’s wider initiative to improve safety, Lightfoot has contributed to a significant reduction in at-fault accident rates and has also helped to keep instances of speeding to a minimum within the fleet, leading to further cost savings.
The safer and steadier driving style adopted by Sciensus drivers since using Lightfoot has also increased average MPG dramatically, resulting in a 15.3% uplift, whilst the fleet is now preventing approximately 437 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. This is equivalent to the amount absorbed annually by a forest of nearly 21,000 trees and is helping the business lower its carbon footprint in line with its pledge to reach net zero by 2045.
Perhaps most impressive is the fleet’s consistently high performance, with 96.2% of its drivers hitting the Elite Driver target every week and an average weekly driver score of 94.6%. Sciensus is frequently one of the top performing fleets out of all Lightfoot’s customers, and shows no signs of giving up its spot on the leaderboard any time soon.
“I’d wholeheartedly recommend Lightfoot, it’s easy to use and the real-time coaching works brilliantly. The fact that it’s designed specifically for cars and LCVs is a real strength as well. Rather than trying to pull off a one-size-fits-all approach like so many telematics solutions, the Lightfoot system does what it does and does it well. We’ve been very impressed by the results so far.”
