Overview

Fibrus is a fast-growing broadband provider bringing full-fibre connectivity to communities across Northern Ireland and Northern England. With engineers and installation teams travelling to rural and hard-to-reach areas daily, fleet performance plays a key role in efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Since rolling out Lightfoot, Fibrus has improved fuel economy, cut risky driving behaviours, and reduced CO₂ emissions — all while preparing its fleet for a transition to all-electric vehicles.

“Lightfoot has proved to be a million times better than our previous telematics solution… Being able to see the savings month on month, it’s really
quite impressive.”

- Sharon McGregor, Fleet, Facilities & Office Manager, Fibrus

About Fibrus

Founded in 2019, Fibrus has rapidly expanded to become a leading provider of gigabit-capable broadband. Its mission is to connect underserved areas with reliable full-fibre infrastructure, and with over 100 vehicles on the road, fleet efficiency is central to delivering excellent service and meeting environmental targets.

The Challenge

As Fibrus scaled its operations, the company needed to:

  • Improve MPG and reduce fuel spend across ICE and hybrid vehicles
  • Minimise risky driving behaviours that increase accident risk and maintenance costs
  • Reduce carbon emissions in line with sustainability commitments
  • Engage drivers in performance improvements without increasing admin overhead

Traditional telematics offered limited insight and reactive reporting, but couldn’t help drivers actively improve. Fibrus needed a proactive, easy-to-use system that would support both short-term improvements and long-term EV transition plans.

The Solution

Fibrus introduced Lightfoot across its fleet of 120 vehicles, giving drivers access to live coaching and rewarding positive behaviour through gamification.

“Lightfoot has proved to be a million times better than our previous telematics solution, and that’s been backed up by the support we receive from
the team too.”

- Sharon McGregor, Fleet, Facilities & Office Manager, Fibrus

The rollout included:

Live in-cab feedback

Drivers receive real-time prompts to drive more smoothly and safely, helping them avoid harsh acceleration, braking, or speeding.

Elite Driver rewards

Weekly Elite Driver targets, app-based leaderboards, and prize draws kept drivers motivated and engaged, with participation rates averaging 90%.

Driver accountability

Lightfoot put drivers in control of their own performance, reducing the need for manager intervention and fostering a culture of responsibility.

Fleet insights dashboard

Managers gained clear, actionable data on fuel use, CO₂ output, and safety scores across the fleet, making it easier to track improvements and maintain consistency.

Lightfoot and Fibrus

The Results

9.2% improvement in MPG

More efficient driving delivered a 9.2% boost in fuel economy, saving Fibrus nearly £20,000 a year in fuel costs.

87% reduction in dangerous driving

Risky manoeuvres such as harsh braking and sharp cornering dropped by 87%, creating a safer fleet and reducing the likelihood of costly incidents.

47.9 tonnes of CO₂ saved annually

The combination of smoother driving and reduced idling cut 47.9 tonnes of carbon emissions each year — equivalent to taking 10 cars off the road.

High driver engagement

Driver buy-in was strong, with average weekly performance scores around 90% and the majority of drivers regularly achieving Elite status.

Driving Safer, Greener Care

With Lightfoot in place, Fibrus has achieved major improvements in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. These results are helping the company manage its fleet more effectively today — while supporting its goal of transitioning to an all-electric fleet in the near future.
