Background to Lightfoot and efficient driving
The way vehicles are driven has a huge impact on their fuel economy, the harmful emissions they create and the accidents they are involved in. But the way we drive is one of our most ingrained habits and something that is hard for us to consciously change.
Lightfoot is a clever technology that gives feedback to drivers exactly when they need it to help them become much more efficient. It also helps them monitor their progress, compete with others and earn rewards and recognition for better driving.
We have millions of miles of experience in the Fleet Telematics industry, where they report that Lightfoot gives them 15 to 20% fuel savings and 50 to 60% reductions in accident rates.
To test the product with private vehicles, we ran a trial of Lightfoot in 120 personal vehicles in our home city of Exeter, and found that the results were even more promising.
Fuel savings of up to 30% were seen, and in the first 8 weeks of the trial, 8 tonnes of CO2 was saved. Those benefits, along with the ability to compete with family, friends and colleagues, meant that Lightfoot immediately became a huge hit with the private motorist.
Driving inefficiently has been shown to be the root cause of many of the most significant issues affecting motorists including excessive fuel consumption, unnecessary emissions of harmful substances, increased engine wear and tear, greater likelihood of accidents and unnecessary driver stress and fatigue.
If you think about it, this makes sense: a driver who has frequent periods of rapid acceleration and harsh braking is likely to do far more damage to their car, their wallet, the environment and other people around them than a driver who has the smooth and steady style Lightfoot encourages.
How Lightfoot works
Lightfoot listens to your vehicle control systems and, using F1-style analytic technology, it feeds back to the driver to help you drive in the “sweet spot” of your engine. Every engine has a “sweet spot”, where you get the maximum performance for the minimum effort. Your Lightfoot score reflects how well you’ve been doing in driving your car to its best abilities, and you can use this to compete with anyone else who has a Lightfoot device.
Lightfoot is plug-and-play; it plugs straight into your On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) socket in your car. This socket is an industry standard, so Lightfoot is compatible with most vehicles.
While you drive, Lightfoot listens constantly to your engine and knows when you are driving in its sweet spot. This is important because it means the engine is operating at its maximum efficiency and this, in turn, correlates to lower fuel consumption, fewer harmful emissions and a considerably safer driving style.
We are working with the UK insurance industry to generate considerable savings for those driving with Lightfoot. We will be offering Lightfoot to a selected number of private motorists, who will be the first to be offered reduced premiums by UK insurers. Each week that your Lightfoot score is above 8500, you are awarded Lightfoot "Elite Driver" status. This means you will be able to access special rewards and benefits, including being entered into that week's random prizedraw for some fantastic prizes including meals at restaurants, days out at UK attractions, and experience days.
Lightfoot gives you privacy: it transmits very little data to the internet. It's not like "black box" telematics. So that you can track your progress on your online portal and compete with others, your score is transmitted to our servers via mobile networks. To achieve this, Lightfoot has it's very own "SIM card and data connection, in much the same way as your mobile phone does. There is no additional cost to you for this connection - it is all included in your monthly subscription.
